The city-hero Sevastopol.
On February, 10, 1784 the port and settlement around it, which were started to be constructed on June, 3, 1783, have received its name - Sevastopol. "Imposing city", "city deserving worship" was it called by Ekaterina II in the decree, which ordered to erect the big fortress with admiralty of the first rank, shipyard, port and military settlement on the coast of Akhtiar bay. So on a place populated even in the beginning of the first millenium B.C. a city was build which was destenied to sustain two sieges, unprecedented on mass heroism and resistance of defenders.
During the Crimean war (1853-1856) Sevastopol became the arena of the main operations. 349 days - from September, 13, 1854 till August, 27, 1855 armies of the opponent besieged the city. Among the defenders of Sevastopol was second lieutenant L.N. Tolstoy who has described the siege in the well-known "Sevastopol Stories".
Sevastopol - as the main base of the Black Sea fleet - took a special place in the plans of the hitlerite HQ. Battle for city began on a dawn on June, 22, 1941 when fascist planes tried to mine entrances to the Sevastopol bays. The defence of Sevastopol, which lasted for 250 days, begun on October, 30, 1941 and ended only on July, 3, 1942. As a result of the fighting for city hitlerites have strongly lost in time and in manpower (up to 300 thousand soldiers and officers were killed and wounded).
In 1965 Sevastopol has been awarded with the rank of the "City - hero". The new Sevastopol, which was rebuild by the whole country, is one of the most beautiful cities of the Crimea.
Destinies of many writers are connected with Sevastopol. Here has begun the military service of A.G. Malyshkin, the author of the novel "Sevastopol". From November, 1903 till October, 1905 Alexander Grinevsky (Green)was held in the Sevastopol prison, arrested for propaganda work among sailors and soldiers. It was possible to get acquainted in the same prison with Ilya Selvinskiy. Stepan Shchipachev was teaching social studies at the Sevastopol artillery school... On June, 26, 1941 Eugeny Petrov has arrived to the battling Sevastopol on the leader of destroyers "Tashkent", which has sustained attacks of Junkers and torpedo boats. For about two months Leonid Sobolev, the known Soviet writer-marine painter has stayed in the besieged Sevastopol. Life and creative works of A.A. Ahmatova, A.A. Zharov, V.A.Lugovskoy and many other writers are connected with Sevastopol.
